I am writing this with a head so heavy and an aching body. Like most things, you have the best of intentions and then life has a way to test you. It’s the eve of Christmas and I am slightly astounded at where I am today.
I think it is safe to say that for the past 6 months or so I was pretty much sucked into a cosmic whirlpool and was flitting between angels and demons. My words cannot give justice to an experience that on hindsight was necessary so let this not be an attempt of my account. That would just cheapen the whole thing. All I know is I was leading a pace in life with the same ferocity of the ticking of my clock which was seconds too fast. I found my temporary salvation (which in itself is an oxymoron) and then in the next moment worked hard to lose myself again. It was brutal but I loved the honesty in it all, the rawness of it when you questioned faith and beliefs to a level you did not even before dare. I suppose it is apt that when the clock finally stopped (no doubt from exhaustion), I did too. Maybe I am superstitious, but perhaps that is the reason I am so reluctant to put new batteries into the clock. So for now, time has simply stopped for me.
My favourite Christmas would have to be a couple of years or so ago in London. Come Christmas Day, I woke up and spent the day with my girlfriend in the comfort of our toasty *tiny* apartment watching Christmas shows and a spot of home-cooking. Really, it’s the simplest of things that sometimes holds the crown for your favourite moments. I am feeling nostalgic about it, but it’s Christmas so I think I am entitled to it.
If Raya focuses on forgiving then Christmas is certainly about giving. I think they have a lot more in common but I am not interested in theological debates. I guess the measure of happiness is an imperfect process and there is no certainty in absolutes. So I am not even going to try.
I wish the world and it’s inhabitants a peaceful and joyful Christmas. Even the baddies need an off-day. In the meantime, I am hoping that some memories are worth remembering, two years from now. Merry Christmas.
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose.
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir and folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows, a turkey and some mistletoe help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa's on his way.
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is gonna spy to see if reindeer really know how to fly.
And so I'm offering this simple phrase to kids from 1 to 92
Although it's been said many times, many ways: Merry Christmas to you.
